Summer is flying by!  Here are things you need to know moving forward:

Mullet Festival, Oct. 6, Kick-off Banquet, Sept 29
Fall (a.k.a. The Mullet Festival) will be here before you know it.  We need “all hands on deck” to make our 10th annual festival a smashing success.  Volunteer to help, even if it’s only for part of a day.  Soon we will be letting you know your options.  Be praying for good weather this year!   Also, it’s time to purchase tickets for the Kick-off Banquet (buffet) at the Indian River Preserve Country Club.  Tickets are $25 per person (remember – this is a fundraiser).  It will be held on, Saturday, September 29 at 5 p.m.  Tickets are available from Erika Watson and Sid Champagne.

“We Missed You at Church” Postcards Available
Have you ever noticed someone has been missing from worship for some time and thought it would be good if someone contacted them?  Why don’t you do it!  Thanks to the generosity of Cathy DeRusha, we now have “We missed you at church.  Please visit us again” postcards of our church that you can pick up and mail.  They will be available in the rear of the sanctuary, along with a copy of the new directory so you can look up an address to write on your card.  Then write personal note and post it.  Please help us let those absent members and visitors/friends know that they are missed!

Leadership Training Event, August 25
Aug. 25 (one week from Saturday) 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Indian River City UMC.  No cost.  Pastor John has already registered those who signed up (22 registered).  Others still can register at

POV (“Point of View”) Seminar, September 15
A POV is a safe place to sit down with other Christians as we share together and wrestle with issues where faithful people may disagree, seeking to understand one another.  We may not agree but we can engage one another without being disagreeable.  POV is a one-day experience that makes space for engaging difficult conversations through the lens of empathy, context and mission – a space where you can bring your thoughts, questions, emotions, and heart without the fear of being judged or coerced.  The theme for this POV will be the issue of how the church should approach LGBTQ inclusion in the Church.  It will be held at First UMC Orlando, Sept. 15  (9-3).  The only cost is a donation for the lunch (recommend $10).  Pastor John will attend.  Register online at website for the East Central District

Update on “The Way Forward”
The Assistant to the Bishop (who also served as the Secretary of “The Way Forward” Commission) will give us an update at a session, Monday, September 24 at 10 a.m., at Suntree UMC in Melbourne.  Pastor John will NOT be attending, as this conflicts with our regular Bible Study.  Everyone is welcome to attend this Update, no registration is required.

Mims UMC’s “Church Conference,” Monday, Oct. 22 at Indian River City UMC
Our annual Church Conference will be held in conjunction with Indian River City and Port St. John churches AT Indian River City UMC, beginning 6:30 p.m.  All our Leaders are expected to attend, every member of the church is also encouraged and has a “vote.”  Mark your calendars now not to miss.  (We will have to cancel Bible Study that evening).

Fresh Expressions Weekend at Mims UMC
One of the leaders of the Fresh Expressions movement in Florida is Rev. Michael Beck.  He will be our guest for the weekend of Nov. 17-18.  He will preach at all services and lead us in a workshop to help us with our plans for our Bike Path ministry.  Watch for more details to come!

Children’s Ministry on Sunday Mornings???
Karen Oddo, our Education Coordinator, would like to find out if any of our youth and children are interested in “God Squad” starting again in September.  God Squad is a 2 hour Sunday School activity on the one Sunday each month with different types of activities, crafts and lessons.  In the past we have had snacks or ordered from McDonalds from the children’s menu (participants bring $2).  Please contact Karen Oddo at if you are interested.
