We had a raffle and made $71.50 on the cakes.  Thanks again to all for your help.  Could not have done it without you.  –  Dotti, Joanne and Karen

Update from the Pastor

Updates About this Weekend, etc.

IT’S HERE!  MULLET FESTIVAL IS HERE!
The Mullet Festival is THIS SATURDAY!  Folks are scurrying around our campus and the community running errands, setting up tents and so forth, and getting things ready!  Thursday and Friday will be the biggest prep days, so we can use all the help we can get.  Work gets started each day about 9 a.m., and continues throughout the day.  Work will also take place Thursday and Friday from 5 – 7:00 p.m. so those of you who work can have the fun of helping!  We thank the usual crew of folks who are spending the week here at the church so that all will be ready.  Contact Julie Harrison if you can pitch in at the Festival itself – we can always use more workers, even if its only for one hour!  Her cell number is 321-704-9499.  The Mullet Festival is Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  We also will need folks for “tear down” on Monday, so come help us pack everything away for next year.  Thanks!

ONLY ONE SERVICE THIS WEEKEND
We remind you that our 7:00 p.m. Saturday evening and 8:30 a.m. Sunday services are cancelled this weekend.  We will hold only one combined service – at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.  There is no breakfast or combined service with the Baptists this year.  (NOTE:  There WILL NOT BE a “coffee hour” this Sunday, but there WILL BE Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.)  We hope to see you Sunday at 11 a.m.

DINNER THIS EVENING AT THE CHURCH
Our Wednesday dinner at the church this evening will be spaghetti with meatballs and sausage, salad and garlic bread.  $8.

PRAYER REQUEST
Please be in prayer for the family of Dorothy Beville (Barbara Beville’s sister-in-law and Sharon Griffis’ aunt), who passed away.  Dorothy was a member of First Baptist Church, Aurantia.

The Latest News from our Church

Here is the latest from your church.

We are now solidly into “fall” mode, even if the thermometer doesn’t realize it (yet).  That means we need all hands on deck for all the activities that will soon be upon us!  Here is info you need to know:

Cancelled Services Due to Mullet Festival Events
Because of the Mullet Festival Kick-off Banquet this Saturday at 5 p.m. (Indian River Preserve Golf Club), there will be NO SATURDAY WORSHIP, SEPTEMBER 29.  And because the Mullet Festival is the next Saturday there will be NO SATURDAY WORSHIP, OCTOBER 6, either.  On SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, there will be no breakfast or outdoor worship with the Baptists.  Instead, we will CANCEL THE 8:30 A.M. SERVICE, AND HOLD ONE COMBINED SERVICE AT 11:00 A.M.  Please mark your calendars!

Mullet Festival Set-up – MANY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
All next week, volunteers will be at the church from 9 a.m. on to help set up everything for the Mullet Festival.  We also will have a team here October 4 and 5 (Thursday and Friday), from 5 – 7 p.m.. so those who work can still help out.    All hands on deck!

Still Need Homemade Baked Goods for the Mullet Festival Bake Sale
Can you bake for our Bake Sale?  We need great items to sell!  Contact Dot Kunde (321-269-9633 or 321-652-7635) to let her know what you can provide and to find out when to bring the items by.

Senior Adult Covered Dish Lunch this Friday
Our MUMS (Mims United Methodist Seniors) will meet for their monthly covered dish luncheon this Friday, Sept. 28 at noon.  Stephanie Phillips will share about her recent trip to Europe, specifically to Wittenberg and Lutherstadt (two cities associated with Martin Luther).

Our Cub Pack Is Growing by Leaps and Bounds!
Recently, our Administrative Council voted to open our Cub Pack to girls.  Then the Pack held two recruitment events at the two elementary schools that serve Mims – with huge responses!  If all those who have registered follow through, our Pack will grow from 11 children to 69 children (25 of whom are girls)!  As we deal with growing pains, we will have to schedule some Pack events in the fellowship hall (a great problem to have!).  Our Troop has also grown by several boys (still all boys).

Dinner this Evening
Our Wednesday night dinner this evening (5 p.m.) will feature Campfire Chicken.  Cost is $8.

Fifth Sunday Offering This Weekend
There are four “Fifth Sunday Offerings” per year.  Every other one is a collection for the Children’s Home, the others are for an unbudgeted need on our campus.  This coming weekend, the funds given (using the special envelops provided on each pew) will be used to purchase an new upgraded video projector – one that will be much brighter.  Any amount over the cost will be applied to upgrading other technology in the sanctuary used for worship.  Thank you for your support in this effort.

Helping Robert Rember on His Journey to Become a Pastor
Many of us know Robert, a young man who was part of our Scout Troop (now graduated), who preached for us several years ago.  Robert is a member of St. James AME Church in Titusville, and has long been aware that God was calling him into the ministry.  For three years, he has hoped to be able to attend a training event for young clergy in Atlanta, “The National Festival of Young Preachers,” but could not afford to go.  We at our church want to send him this January.  We have an anonymous member of our church who is willing to “match” dollar for dollar donations from others in our church.  Total cost of his registration, lodging, meals, and airfare will be less than $1,000, we believe.  If you want to donated to help this fine young man answer God call to become a pastor, make sure to designate your gift for the “Youth Ministry Fund.”  (Robert will preach for our services the weekend after Easter, April 27/28.)

Church Conference Monday, October 22
Our annual Church Conference will be held in conjunction with Indian River City UMC and Port St. John UMC, on Monday, October 22, at Indian River City UMC, beginning at 6:30 p.m.  All members of the church are urged to attend (all members may vote).  Stephanie Phillips and Pastor John will be making a brief presentation about our new “Fresh Expression” outreach ministry to the bike trail community.  Come and celebrate the ministries of our United Methodist congregations across greater Titusville!

See everyone this weekend for worship!

Pastor John

Church News

Here is the latest from your church.

Hello, Church family!  Here are some items you will want to know about what’s happening at Mims UMC!

Mullet Festival Restaurant Day is Today!
Go out for dinner this evening (Thursday) to Village Inn in Titusville between 5 – 8 p.m.  A percentage of your check will come back to our Mullet Festival fund!

Our Church Now Sponsors a Soccer Team!
Our team is made up of children below the age of 6, so it will be fun to watch them play!  Our church name will be on their soccer shirts and we hope to come out in force to watch them play (and build relationships with the parents and grandparents and invite them to our church).  Games begin this Saturday and continue every Saturday through November 10.  The games are played at Chain of Lakes Park (from US1, turn east on Truman Scarborough Way).  The game this Saturday will begin at 9 a.m. and will be played on “Field 9” – the team color is red, and the coach will be wearing a Gator hat – that’s how you can find them.  Bring a lawn chair and cheer our team on!

Work Renovating the Scout House this Saturday and Next
The volunteer team coming from other congregations to renovate the interior of our Scout House (following hurricane damage) will be here on Saturday, Sept. 8 and 15.  Drop by and thank them for this gift of their time and talents!  The Conference is also paying for the interior restoration from offerings other churches gave to help churches with hurricane damage ($3,000).

Cub Pack Growing with Both Boys and Girls
Our Administrative Council voted recently for our Cub Pack to invite girls to join our Pack (the decision about the Scout Troop including girls has NOT been made).  It appears that this will greatly strengthen our program.  The Pack held its Mims Elementary Recruitment Night on Wednesday and had 17 new girls and 16 new boys register!  This, added to the 11 boys already in the Pack, will greatly increase our numbers!  They will hold another recruitment night for Pinewood Elementary next week.

Wednesday Night Suppers Resume Sept. 12
The Dinners are back! – Wednesdays at 5 p.m.  This week is meatloaf, roasted potatoes, and broccoli casserole.

Church News: Back to Normal

Back to Usual Worship Schedule

It’s hard to believe that summer is over and fall is around the corner!  Time sure flies!

Regular Schedule Resumes
Beginning this weekend, our worship schedule is back to normal:  7:00 p.m. on Saturdays, 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. on Sundays, 9:45 a.m. Sunday School.  Write yourself a note and tape it to your bathroom mirror (that’s what I do to remember!).  See you in worship!

New Sermon Series Begins
Beginning this weekend, Pastor John will begin a sermon series called “Taste and See” focusing on enriching our experience of Holy Communion.  We tend to see Communion as a somber memoriail meal – and of course, sometimes (especially during Lent), that is appropriate.  But much of Christendom calls Communion “The Eucharist,” that implies joy and celebration.  During this series, Pastor John will preach on other stories and texts that broaden and deepen our experience of Communion.  Naturally, it only makes sense to offer The Eucharist at each service during the series.  Come “taste and see the goodness of the Lord!”

Worship Order on Sundays Adjusted for the Series
In order to focus our worship toward Holy Communion, the order of our worship services will be adjusted somewhat.  Basically, the sermon will come earlier in the service, and other portions (offering an prayers) will follow as our response to hearing the Word.  The purpose is to elevate the importance of sharing in the sacrament.  This actually is the recommended worship order outlined in the front of our hymnal.  We’re going to give it a try during this series.  It’s good to mix it up from time to time so we don’t fall into a rut!

Scout House Interior Repairs
On Saturday, Sept. 8 and 15, a volunteer mission team from First United Methodist Church of Kissimmee will be on our campus to renovate the interior of the Scout House that was damaged by water due to the hurricane.  After the repairs, new carpet will be laid.  The cost for all this renovation is being covered by offerings from other congregations (around $3,000).  It is good to be part of a “connectional” denomination where sisters and brothers from other congregations show the love of Jesus – to us!  Hopefully one day, we can return the gesture!

Eagle Scout Ceremony
We are invited to attend the Eagle Award Ceremony for Quintin Lee Davis of our Troop.  This will take place at North Brevard Shrine Club (545 N. Washington Ave.), Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.  We are proud of the exceptional young men in our Troop!  Congratulations, Quintin!

Offering Counters Needed
Following the 11:00 a.m. service every week, two (non-related) persons from our congregation count our offering and prepare it for deposit.  We are in need of a few more folks to be trained to do this – on a rotation so that no one is asked to do it more than once per month.  Contact Bill Haas or Julie Harrison if you are interested.

Mullet Festival Is Upon Us!
In just one month, we will be in FULL MULLET FESTIVAL MODE!   We need everyone’s participation.  Plan to volunteer by contacting Julie Harrison, and pass the word to those you know to come and join us for the day.  The Kick Off Banquet is Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Indian River Preserve Country Club.  Cost per ticket is $25.  Buy your tickets through the church office.  Some Mullet festival committee members are also selling them.

Worship Schedule Adjustments around the Mullet Festival
There will be NO Saturday worship on Sept. 25 (we will all be at the Kick Off Banquet), and NO Saturday worship on Oct. 6 (the day of the Festival).  On the day after the Festival (Sunday, Oct. 7), the 8:30 a.m. service will be cancelled.  We all attend the 11:00 a.m. service that day (so we can all “sleep in” a little bit – we’ll need it!).  There is no breakfast or combined service with the Baptists this year.

See you in worship!

Pastor John

POV (“Point of View”) Seminar, September 15
A POV is a safe place to sit down with other Christians as we share together and wrestle with issues where faithful people may disagree, seeking to understand one another.  We may not agree but we can engage one another without being disagreeable.  POV is a one-day experience that makes space for engaging difficult conversations through the lens of empathy, context and mission – a space where you can bring your thoughts, questions, emotions, and heart without the fear of being judged or coerced.  The theme for this POV will be the issue of how the church should approach LGBTQ inclusion in the Church.  It will be held at First UMC Orlando, Sept. 15  (9-3).  The only cost is a donation for the lunch (recommend $10).  Pastor John will attend.  Register online at website for the East Central District   https://florida-reg.brtapp.com/EastCentralDistrictPointofViewPOV

Update on “The Way Forward”
The Assistant to the Bishop (who also served as the Secretary of “The Way Forward” Commission) will give us an update at a session, Monday, September 24 at 10 a.m., at Suntree UMC in Melbourne.  Pastor John will NOT be attending, as this conflicts with our regular Bible Study.  Everyone is welcome to attend this Update, no registration is required.

Mims UMC’s “Church Conference,” Monday, Oct. 22 at Indian River City UMC
Our annual Church Conference will be held in conjunction with Indian River City and Port St. John churches AT Indian River City UMC, beginning 6:30 p.m.  All our Leaders are expected to attend, every member of the church is also encouraged and has a “vote.”  Mark your calendars now not to miss.  (We will have to cancel Bible Study that evening).

Fresh Expressions Weekend at Mims UMC
One of the leaders of the Fresh Expressions movement in Florida is Rev. Michael Beck.  He will be our guest for the weekend of Nov. 17-18.  He will preach at all services and lead us in a workshop to help us with our plans for our Bike Path ministry.  Watch for more details to come!

Children’s Ministry on Sunday Mornings???
Karen Oddo, our Education Coordinator, would like to find out if any of our youth and children are interested in “God Squad” starting again in September.  God Squad is a 2 hour Sunday School activity on the one Sunday each month with different types of activities, crafts and lessons.  In the past we have had snacks or ordered from McDonalds from the children’s menu (participants bring $2).  Please contact Karen Oddo at ladybug077@outlook.com if you are interested.

Church News

Dear Church Family,

It’s great to be back from my vacation!  We missed all of you while we were gone.  Thanks for welcoming the guest preachers who filled in so well.  I know they were a blessing to you, as you were to them!  Even though it is still “summer,” lots is going on that you will want to know about.  Here is a summary:

It’s Our Turn to Put On the Community Breakfast, Sat. August 4
Our community puts on a free breakfast for anyone in the community who wants to come every Saturday morning at First UMC in Titusville.  Our church provides the volunteers four times per year.  August 4 in our next turn.  We will need folks to cook and serve.  Contact Julie Harrison (321-704-9499) for info and to volunteer.

Christian Men’s Gathering Every Wednesday at Sonny’s
All men of the church and community are invited every Wednesday (10:45-11:45 a.m.) to Sonny’s BBQ in Titusville for lunch (salad bar, pulled pork, beans, slaw and drink) for a “donation” to cover the cost of the food and service.  This group is called F.U.E.L   Every week there is a different inspirational speaker.  Pastor John attends some weeks.  No reservation required – just drop by.

All Leaders Training Event, Saturday, August 25
Every leader is expected (and everyone else is welcome) to attend a training event put on by our District, Saturday, August 25 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m., free lunch included), a Indian River City UMC.  There will be three dynamic presenters who will share with us lots of great ideas and information to help us become more vital and effective as a congregation.  We need a count to turn in so they can prepare for lunch.  RSVP to Pastor John (you can reply to this email, and be sure to give your name) or sign up at Administrative Council, July 31, or in worship.

Children’s Home Offering This Weekend
At this weekend’s services we will receive an offering for the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home.  Please plan to be generous with this “second mile” gift.

Do You Have a Heart for Foster Children?
Pastor John is involved in a Foster Care Task Force, a part of the Northern Brevard Coalition of Human Services.  This group, made up mostly of representatives from congregations, exists to support foster parenting and to recruit new foster homes (very much needed in Northern Brevard).  There is a new initiative we are coordinating with Brevard Family Partnership (the Foster Care agency for Brevard County).  It’s called “Just One,” with the hope that every congregation within our county will be involved in supporting the wonderful people who open their homes and the children they care for.  “Just One” means that if every church had just one fostering family, there would be plenty of good homes to place children into.  The plan also is that churches will “adopt” a fostering family – coming alongside them to encourage them and offering various kinds of support.  We are looking for a person in our congregation who may feel called to be our “point person” for this ministry, let me (Pastor John) know (you can reply to this and give your name and that you are interested, or call 321-794-0010).

Mission Trip Opportunity
Tori Stonebreaker and Riley Myers of our church will be going again to the Dominican Republic, and still have a few tee shirts for sale ($20).  They are available in the church office.  However, if you are interested in experiencing a mission trip, our congregation has been invited to participate in a mission trip to Guatemala, January 5-19, being organized by Coronado Community UMC in New Smyrna Beach.  That church supports a clinic and school there.  The cost is about $1,500 and lodging will be in a hotel.  If you are interested, contact Jack Travis (734-368-3838).

Mullet Festival Day at Hero’s Grill, July 31
Our next Mullet Festival restaurant fundraiser will be from 2-5 p.m. at Hero’s Grill (1300 South St.).  Be sure to tell them you are supporting the Mullet Festival.

Trustees Meet Tomorrow (Tuesday)
Our Trustees will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7 p.m.

Senior Luncheon, this Friday at Noon
Our MUMS (Mims United Methodist Seniors) will hold their monthly covered dish luncheon this Friday, July 27, at noon.  Please join us!

Administrative Council, Tuesday July 31
Our next full Council meeting will be Tuesday, July 31 at 7 p.m.  Voting Council members are expected, everyone is welcome to attend and observe.

Church-wide Birthday Party Needs Table Hosts
Our annual Church-wide Birthday Party will be Saturday, January 26, and we already have nine table hosts!  We still need hosts for “April,” “June,” and “September.”  To volunteer, contact Delorse Cohen (321-383-1295).
